WASHING & DETOXING

Proper dreadlock care demands regular washing, ideally 1-3 times per week, utilizing dreadlock-safe products exclusively. It is imperative that your dreadlocks are thoroughly dried before retiring for the night. We strongly advise scheduling your washing routine when you have ample time to ensure your hair dries completely, either naturally throughout the day or with the assistance of a hair dryer.

The use of residue-free products specifically formulated for dreadlocks is paramount in maintaining the health and cleanliness of your locks. At our establishment, we prioritize and recommend the use of Dr. Locs, a brand renowned for its dedication to dreadlock care and its commitment to quality.

Maintaining your dreadlocks with the right products and a consistent washing routine is essential for their longevity and overall health.

DREADLOCK DETOX:

A dreadlock detox, also known as a deep cleanse, is a process used to remove residue buildup, excess oils, and impurities from your dreadlocks.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Residue-free shampoo (specifically designed for dreadlocks)

  • Apple cider vinegar (optional)

  • Baking soda (optional)

  • Towel

  • Spray bottle (optional)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Solution (Optional): You can create a natural cleansing solution by mixing one part apple cider vinegar with three parts water. This mixture can help break down residue. Alternatively, you can mix a small amount of baking soda with water to create a paste. However, these solutions should be used sparingly, as they can be harsh on your hair.

  2. Wet Your Dreadlocks: Thoroughly wet your dreadlocks in warm water. Ensure that your dreads are completely saturated, as this will help the cleansing process.

  3. Apply Residue-Free Shampoo: Apply a generous amount of residue-free shampoo to your wet dreadlocks. Work the shampoo into your dreads, massaging your scalp and focusing on the roots and any areas with visible residue.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse your dreads with warm water until all the shampoo is completely washed out. This step is crucial to remove any loosened residue and impurities.

  5. Optional ACV Rinse: If you've chosen to use an apple cider vinegar solution, you can apply it before shampooing or after rinsing out the shampoo. Spray or pour the diluted apple cider vinegar over your dreadlocks, making sure to saturate them. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

  6. Dry Your Dreads: Gently squeeze excess water from your dreads using a clean towel. Avoid twisting or wringing them, as this can cause damage.

  7. Air Dry: Allow your dreadlocks to air dry naturally. Avoid using a hairdryer, as excessive heat can weaken the structure of your dreads.

  8. Maintenance: After a detox, it's a good time to perform routine maintenance, such as palm rolling and separating conjoined dreads, to help them regain their shape and definition.

It's important to note that dreadlock detox should not be performed too frequently, as it can strip your dreads of natural oils and lead to dryness. Most people do a deep cleanse every few months or as needed, depending on their lifestyle and hair care routine. Additionally, consult with a professional loctician or stylist for guidance tailored to your specific dreadlocks and their unique needs.

AT HOME MAINTENANCE

Palm rolling your locks periodically can aid in maintaining a cylindrical shape and reducing frizz, as well as minimizing loops and bumps during the first 3-6 months after installation. However, it's important to note that palm rolling alone may not completely prevent the formation of loops or bumps. For comprehensive management of these aspects, it is advisable to seek regular dreadlock maintenance from a professional Loctician, especially during the initial stages of your lock journey.

If you are interested in learning how to crochet your own locks at home, it can be a valuable skill. Gentle use of the crochet hook near the roots and along the midlengths can help. While there are numerous online resources available for learning this technique, it's worth noting that it can pose a learning curve for most individuals.

While there are various DIY methods for maintaining your locks at home, it's crucial to understand that at-home maintenance should not replace professional maintenance conducted by a certified Loctician. For those interested in further exploring the use of crochet hooks for lock maintenance, I offer 1:1 or group classes to provide guidance and support. Please feel free to reach out to me via email or text to inquire about self-maintenance classes.
